Argon
As inert atmosphere argon is indispensable for electric arc welding of aluminium and stainless steel. Argon is a colourless and odourless gas. The gas is chemically inert, non-combustible and oxygen suppressant. Argon is present in air with 1% vol.
In its capacity of protective gas, in function of the materials to be welded, it is mixed or not mixed with carbon dioxide and sometimes with small quantities of other gases such as oxygen, helium… Argon also serves as carrier gas for gas chromatography. Certain organic substances can be detected with the highly sensitive argon detection method.
